These amazing chocolate treats are an excellent way to turn a dessert into a nutritious and delicious food.
I love making these amazing chocolate treats for several reasons. First, this is an excellent opportunity to turn a dessert into an exceptionally nutrient dense and delicious treat. Second, it is super easy and fast to make. And third, you can add all kinds of superfoods that will boost your health. In this recipe we are using raw cacao, maca root powder, raw honey and organic orange zest.
Health Benefits of raw cacao
Raw cacao, the most complex and nutrient dense food ever studied. Many compounds that give chocolate its super powers are going to be destroyed by heat so it’s important that cacao stays raw. For that reason, all the commercially made chocolates, even the dark ones, do not have the same health benefit as the bars we are making here. Raw cacao has unbelievably high antioxidant activity. It boosts mood and reduces stress response, reduces cardiovascular disease risk and lowers blood pressure.
Health Benefits of Maca root
Maca root powder is another superfood ingredient. This ingredient shouldn’t be raw, it can give us an upset stomach. We use Maca root power that has been gelatinized. Maca is a ancient Peruvian crop, a relative to radishes. Peruvians traditionally used it to boost energy and improves vitality and virility. Maca also helps balance hormones and stimulate sexual desire in men and women. It is also an adaptogen, helps the body to regulates stress response.
Health Benefits of Orange peel
Orange peel or fresh orange zest can be used interchangeably. When you buy organic oranges save the skins, dry them out completely and store in an air-tight container. This way you can use them all year around, even when oranges are not in season. For a recipe like this one you’ll need to grind dry peels in a coffee grinder. Orange peel contains that have anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic activity, as wells immune boosting activity and high levels of vitamin C. Slightly bitter taste stimulates secretion of digestive juices helping with sluggish digestion.
